“After passage of the Juvenile Second Chance Act in 2023, there were no appropriations made for how to go about implementing the new law, which allowed for people who were children sentenced as adults to extreme sentences, like life in prison, to have an early chance to come up for parole.”
“To see those children be sentenced to extreme punishment, to be essentially condemned to die in prison for an act they committed as a young person, really drove me to find a way, to create a pathway out of prison for people who were so young when they committed their offenses, to have that opportunity to demonstrate their growth, how much they’ve changed.”
“I believe in the human spirit. I believe that we’re all more than our worst mistakes. And that when given that care, love, and support that person needs, that a person can do anything. Nothing is impossible. Including people who’ve cause very serious harm. I believe in people and I believe in redemption.”
